If networking and social media is your shop window — how often are you changing the display?
Regularly, Sharon and I walk past a particular shop. I’m not going to say which shop, or even where it is. But we walk past it often enough to notice that they haven’t changed the display in the window for some time now, months I think.
They do sell some stuff that we might buy, in fact I did buy something from them, based on what they had in their shop window, some months ago.
But with nothing new or intriguing in the window since then, we haven’t been tempted to go inside. We tend to walk past when they’re shut, and if we saw something we would go back during their opening hours.
I’ve said many times over the years that networking is my shop window. I was an estate agent for 20 years, with a lot of that career being pre internet and all of it being pre social media. So our actual shop window, and our weekly newspaper ad was what we used to entice people to come in and talk to us. Every big opportunity starts with a little conversation, and we used the window display, and put a lot of thought into our newspaper ads, so that people had a reason to come back and look at them regularly.
